Easily Add Copyright Metadata In Adobe Lightroom

When it comes to copyright many people like to place watermarks across their pictures in the hopes that it will protect them to some extent. The problem with this is that it detracts from the overall picture itself because no one really likes seeing a watermark.

Now, I’m guilty of doing this myself and in some cases I’m not willing to release an image without a watermark but there is another way you can add copyright data proving you’re the rightful owner of the image and it all remains embedded “hidden” in the image file.

Trust me it’s not as complicated as it sounds and once you get everything setup it instantly becomes ten times easier!

Let’s begin shall we:

Open Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

Now select your image or images in the tray below that you want to add your copyright information to. Once your files are selected go to the menu bar at the top and find the one labeled Metadata.

Scroll down until you come across Edit Metadata Presets and you will be presented with a screen that looks like this:

Clik here to view.

This is screen is the location where you will enter all your copyright information. As you can see from the screenshot above that some items are highlighted in red. These fields are common fields and are a good place to start. You are not required to enter any information you don’t wish to enter.

Typically I fill out in the above fields in the following way:

Under IPTC Copyright

  • Copyright 2014
  • Copyrighted
  • All Rights Reserved

Then as you move down you will see the creator field which I have set up as:

Clik here to view.

IPTC Creator

  • My Name
  • My Address
  • My City
  • My State
  • My Country
  • My email address
  • My website
  • and my title as the “Photographer”

As you can see I don’t enter all my information into the fields because I only do photography part time and since I’m not doing anything in a commercial or more professional capacity I feel most of the important information is there.

Once you have entered all the information you are comfortable with click Done. You will be prompted to give your metadata preset a title. I just use the name of my company + copyright so I know exactly what information is being shared when I select that particular preset.

After you have given your preset a name and saved it those files you selected before you began now have the new copyright metadata applied to them.

But let’s say you want to apply your copyright to every future image that you import but don’t want to go through constantly selecting images each every time.

Good news. You can do apply the copyright automatically to all new images with just a few simple clicks!

Add Copyright On The Fly During Import

When you click on File>Import Photos & Videos you are presented with this screen:

Clik here to view.
importcopyright

Find the section marked “Apply During Import” and then find the area below it marked Metadata. Click on the words “None” and then select your preset name.

Now any photos you import with this method will all have the metadata applied to them.

Setting up Auto Import Copyright Metadata

Go to File>Auto Import>Auto Import Settings

Find the area marked Metadata and change None to the name of your preset you just made and click OK.

See not to hard was it?

If you found this tutorial helpful it would mean a lot to me if you could share it with others who may find it useful as well. If you have any comments or questions please let me know in the comments section below.
